Periodontal Disease
Periodontal Disease is an oral disease that affects almost half of all Americans. Periodontal Disease is a bacterial infection that leads to inflammation of the tissues, and can cause destruction of the bone that supports your teeth. Due to this "periodontal pockets” start to form between your gums and teeth, which causes bacteria to collect.
Treating Periodontal Disease
Periodontal disease is diagnosed by the use of an instrument called a periodontal probe. This probe measures the pocket depths around each tooth. Indicators of healthy gums will have pocket depths of 1-3 millimeters. Pocket depths of 4+ millimeters are signs of periodontal disease. The higher the depth the more advanced the disease is.
A procedure known as Scaling and Root Planning is used to address periodontal disease. During this treatment, instruments are used to thoroughly clean below the gumline, removing bacteria and buildup from the roots of your teeth. In some cases, laser therapy or localized antibiotics may also be used to help your gums heal and reduce infection. After Scaling and Root planning. It is strongly recommended that patients return every 3-4 months for routine periodontal maintenance appointments. These appointments help us stay on top of this disease and prevent more bone loss, and pocket growth.
Preventing or Stopping the Growth of Periodontal Disease:
- Brushing and flossing twice daily
- Use of an electric toothbrush
- Use of a Waterpik
- Avoid tobacco, nicotine and alcohol.
