Electro-cardiogram (EKG/ECG) in Flower Mound
What is Electrocardiogram (EKG / ECG)
An electrocardiogram, commonly called an EKG or ECG, is a simple, non-invasive test that records the electrical activity of your heart. At Heart & Vascular Specialists DFW, EKGs are performed in-office to help diagnose heart rhythm problems, evaluate symptoms, and monitor overall heart health.
This test provides immediate results and plays a critical role in identifying both routine and potentially serious cardiac conditions.
What Does an EKG Measure?
Every heartbeat is triggered by an electrical signal that travels through the heart muscle. An EKG records these signals and helps your cardiologist evaluate:
- Heart rate and rhythm
- Electrical conduction pathways
- Signs of heart muscle damage
- Evidence of prior or active heart attacks
- Effects of medications or electrolyte imbalances
Abnormal EKG findings often guide the need for further testing or treatment.
When Is an EKG Recommended?
Your cardiologist may order an electrocardiogram if you experience:
- Chest pain or pressure
- Shortness of breath
- Palpitations or irregular heartbeat
- Dizziness or fainting
- Fatigue without clear cause
- High blood pressure
- Abnormal findings on previous cardiac tests
EKGs are also commonly performed as part of routine cardiac evaluations, pre-operative clearance, or follow-up monitoring for known heart conditions.
Conditions an EKG Can Help Detect
An EKG can help identify or suggest the presence of:
- Arrhythmias (irregular heart rhythms)
- Atrial fibrillation or flutter
- Bradycardia or tachycardia (slow or fast heart rate)
- Heart attack (myocardial infarction) — past or ongoing
- Conduction abnormalities (bundle branch blocks)
- Enlarged heart chambers
- Electrolyte imbalances affecting the heart
While an EKG is highly informative, it is often used alongside other diagnostic tests such as echocardiograms or stress tests for a complete evaluation.
What to Expect During an EKG Test
An EKG is quick, painless, and performed in our office.
Here’s what typically happens:
- Small adhesive electrodes are placed on your chest, arms, and legs
- You’ll lie still while the machine records your heart’s electrical activity
- The test takes about 5–10 minutes
- No needles, radiation, or recovery time is required
- You can return to normal activities immediately after the test.
Preparing for an EKG
Minimal preparation is needed. To ensure accurate results, we recommend:
- Wearing loose, comfortable clothing
- Avoiding lotions or oils on your chest on the day of the test
- Informing your provider of any medications you’re taking
Our team will guide you through the process and answer any questions you may have.
