Preventative Dentistry in New York

We teach our patients how to incorporate preventive dental measures into their everyday routines in order to promote vibrant oral health. Preventive care is the best line of defense against health complications that can arise down the road. While a lot of research continues to be done highlighting the connection between mouth and body health, many people still tend to neglect their overall oral health. To protect your family and yourself, it is vital to start employing those simple and inexpensive dental habits that will pay healthy dividends in the form of healthier teeth and healthier bodies.

Comprehensive Examination: With general dentistry, an oral exam involves a full inspection of the mouth as well as the head and neck. Using digital radiographs and other diagnostic tools, we can pinpoint any cavities, gum disease, or other abnormalities that might lie within your mouth. Our diagnostic tools also allow us to detect changes in prior dental work and to ensure they are in the best condition possible.

Cleaning (Dental Prophylaxis): Also known as dental prophylaxis, cleanings involve the removal of dental plaque and tartar that can accumulate on the teeth. Plaque and tartar are notoriously difficult to remove even with thorough regular brushing and flossing. Special ultrasonic instruments are used to remove these stubborn deposits and tough stains.

Digital Radiographs: Digital radiography is a form of X-ray imaging used instead of traditional photographic film. Digital radiography produces larger photos to better source hard-to-see cavities. It requires very low levels of radiation exposure to produce the same quality image as film radiographs (digital X-ray gives 70% less exposure to radiation than traditional X-rays). Digital radiography is also environmentally friendly, completely eliminating the need for developer and fixer solutions, which significantly reduces chemical waste.

Fluoride: We offer a simple fluoride treatment that effectively strengthens your teeth against decay and sensitivity. Your fluoride treatment will be personalized to meet your unique needs and circumstances. A fluoride treatment will dramatically reduce your risk for painful tooth decay.

Sealants: Dental sealants are another preventative measure used to smooth out the pockets of the molars. Dental sealants are especially advantageous for young children, because it is difficult for them to brush their cavity-prone back molars. Sealants fill the fissured and grooved surfaces of these teeth to prevent buildup.

Oral Cancer Screening: The goal of oral cancer screening is to identify mouth cancer in its early stages when there is a greater chance for a cure and an opportunity to instate preventive measures. During every exam, we screen our patients for any suspicious lesions that might develop in their mouths.

Grinding and Clenching: With stress on the rise, many patients are showing signs of grinding or clenching their teeth during sleep. Teeth grinding can lead to chips at the edges of teeth and micro-fractures, which can have long-term effects such as tooth sensitivity, gum recession, abfractions, and reduced bone support.
